Rooftops are Bangkok's signature flex and its most-argued value question — Sky Bar's ฿600–900+ cocktails versus Octave's half-price version of the same skyline. That debate gets its own page: rooftop bars, ranked honestly, including the free alternatives.

The Chinatown Soi Nana speakeasy belt — and to be clear, that's Soi Nana off Yaowarat in Chinatown, nothing to do with Nana Plaza on Sukhumvit — is the best bar crawl in the city. Teens of Thailand pioneered it in 2015; Tep Bar pours ya dong (Thai infused spirits) to live traditional music; Ba Hao, Asia Today and Tropic City fill the alleys between, and 23 Bar & Gallery keeps drinks under ฿200 (~$6) for the budget leg.

Cocktails are now world class, and the power shifted. Bangkok put eight bars on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 — its best showing ever — and the story is independents beating hotel bars: Dry Wave Cocktail Studio at #4 (Best Bar in Thailand), Bar Us at #6, and Lennon's — the vinyl listening bar at the Rosewood and the 2026 breakout — at #7. The runners-up across Thonglor and Sathorn out-mix most Western capitals at ฿350–450 a drink.

Craft beer is finally free and booming. The January 2025 liquor-law amendment (passed 415–5) broke the two-conglomerate duopoly's grip, microbrewery licenses started flowing from October 2025, and a brewpub wave is following. Meanwhile the standbys pour on: Pijiu in Chinatown, Mikkeller Ekkamai, Hair of the Dog, Changwon Express.

Clubs: the RCA big-boxes (Onyx, cover ~฿400–500; Route 66 ~฿300) still pack young-Thai crowds but sit on borrowed time — the State Railway declined the lease renewal and everyone expects the wrecking ball. The energy moved to Silom's Decho Road, the new techno strip: Subwerk, the relocated Mustache, Elsewhere for after-hours. Beam, Thonglor's techno flagship, is closed. Soi 11 remains the tourist party strip; Khao San the backpacker one (entry ฿120–150 with a drink).

LGBTQ+ Bangkok is having its best era anywhere in Asia. Marriage equality took effect in January 2025 — first in Southeast Asia — and Bangkok Pride 2026 drew 500,000+. The geography is Silom: Soi 4 for bars (Telephone, Balcony, Stranger Bar's drag), Soi 2 for the clubs — DJ Station is the flagship — plus House of Heals, Pangina Heals' drag venue, showing nightly at 8:30pm.

The red-light zones, one honest paragraph: Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy and Patpong exist, they're safe to walk through and photograph from the street, and Soi Cowboy is a five-minute neon spectacle at most. The one active scam worth naming: Patpong's 'ping pong show' touts, whose unmarked venues run padded bills — don't follow them in. Patpong's actual draw for most visitors is its night market, plus the Patpong Museum for the history. Go or don't; we're not moralizing either way.

Jazz is the sleeper scene: Saxophone Pub near Victory Monument is the first-timer pick, Foojohn does it in Talad Noi, Brown Sugar in Chinatown, and the Bamboo Bar is the premium room. Sets start 8–9:30pm and pub beers run ฿150–220 (~$4.50–6.50) — some of the cheapest world-class nightlife in the city.
